Large 1858 Map of Natick
When a local, long-time client purchased a 124 year old, turn of the century building in downtown Natick, he came to us with a challenge. This old map had been stuffed in a corner of the building, and he wanted to see if we could bring it back to a level where he could display it, as a way of recognizing the historic nature of the building.
We were not sure whether our paper conservator could do much. This map had been rolled for many decades and the paper was literally falling apart.
The restorer began by removing the varnish, flattening the paper and methodically cleaning it. Numerous pieces, which had fallen off inside the bag it was stored in, were then painstakingly fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. The image was then mounted onto a linen backing in order to stabilize and strengthen the map so that it could be safely handled and eventually framed. The final step was to color in any and all missing areas to match their surroundings.
The result was miraculous. We then chose a beautiful frame to enhance the map and installed it back in the building where it had resided for so long.
