About this artist

Sophie Hallonquist is a Polish-Canadian artist who specializes in the ancient encaustic painting technique which dates back to the 5th Century B.C. Hallonquist was born in Poland in 1941. Early in her art career, she studied drawing and tapestry weaving and later continued drawing, painting, and design in Sweden and Canada. Her encaustic still lifes are done with melted beeswax and pigments that result in a glossy enamel-like surface with intricate textural qualities which echo to her early interests in textural weaving. The artist currently lives in Canada and her art is found in galleries across Europe and North America.
