Cows In Need of a Cleaning

Cows in Field – Late 19th Century

When we first saw this pastoral scene, we knew we were in for a treat. Even though the painting had a large L-shaped tear in the bottom left quadrant of the canvas, and there was heavy and uneven layers of dirt and dingy varnish obscuring some of the details, we could still recognize the excellent technical ability of the artist who painted it.

There was a very painterly quality to the entire composition, and we could see a few small areas where the intentional highlights would make this painting sing when properly cleaned.

There was significant rippling from the heavy “impasto” technique as well. The tear could have been fixed with a patch, but the owner decided to go with a lining in order to flatten the rippling for aesthetic reasons.

So the painting was given a thorough cleaning in order to even out the surface and reveal the true colors and gorgeous background lighting, it was lined and the tear was beautifully filled and in-painted to match the surrounding areas.

Finally it was given a fresh subtle satin surface that accentuated the highlights and bright color.
