This watercolor illustrates the importance of conservation framing. It had been framed for decades with old cardboard mats and backing which leached acid that burned the paper, creating a brown line around the artwork.
Or restorer was able to carefully clean and bleach the paper to restore it to it’s original white color, while simultaneously de-acidifying the paper so that it does not continue to deteriorate.
The final step was to re-frame it with PH neutral conservation matting and backing and museum glass.
