Copy of Raphael Portrait Painting – Circa 1875
When this painting arrived in the gallery, we immediately noticed its dingy yellow color and cracking. But it wasn’t until we inspected the reverse of the canvas that we noticed evidence of water damage. This piece required some extensive repairs.
The water damage had loosened the paint from the canvas and flaking had already begun. Without a new lining this piece likely would have lost most of it’s paint. Luckily it was addressed in time, and our conservator was able to do a spectacular job stabilizing the canvas, filling and meticulously inpainting the areas of lost paint, and removing the yellowed, dirty varnish.
The result speaks for itself, with a dramatic brightening, and a complete remediation of the loosening paint. The matching of the color on the in-painting was perfect. Notice the subtle highlights that appear after the cleaning.
