Dirty & Brittle Vintage Harbor Scene

Danish Harbor with Sailboats – 30×40

This beautiful harbor scene had passed through several generations of one family. It traveled from Denmark to Kentucky, where it hung above a great room fireplace for many years. Many decades of heat, smoke and changing climates took a toll on the painting.

When it arrived at its current home in Massachusetts, the varnish had yellowed and the canvas was extremely brittle and thin. Tiny pin-holes could be seen all over the canvas from the back when held up to the light. The paint was also starting to show early signs of “crazing” or cracking, and was in need of some cleaning and restoration.

While we may not have recommended re-lining at this stage if this painting were slated for re-sale, the owner was more concerned with stabilizing and preserving for the long term in order to enjoy and display without worry & eventually pass down to his heirs.

Accordingly, the painting was professionally stabilized and strengthened with re-lining; the process of joining a new canvas to the back of the old with warm wax, thus stabilizing the thinning canvas and cracking paint. The piece was then professionally cleaned of its old, yellowed varnish and given a fresh protective layer.
