About this artist

Gary Smith was born in Worcester, MA in 1953. He received his Bachelors Degree at Boston College and later acquired a Masters Degree in Pastoral Counseling from Emmanuel College. He worked as a high school teacher for ten years and then as a business manager for a local college for a number of years. A largely self-taught artist, it was during the first few years after college that Gary began to paint and draw. He gravitated towards painting the sea early in his art career, drawn to the sense of movement that he found in the ocean. He portrays the energy of the sea through careful consideration of light and color. Though his paintings are realistic, Gary considers the sea to be an abstract entity. Smith creates black and white line drawings that are highly intricate and layered in meaning. They are meant to be uplifting images full of beauty, strength and resolution. The juxtaposition of crisp lines with the organic patterns create beautifully fluid, figurative collages of drawn elements. All artwork is available for sale.
