About this artist

James Rosenquist (1933-2017) was an artist from Minnesota who moved to New York in the 1950’s where he studied at the Art Student’s League. He also worked as a commercial sign painter, doing billboards and  window advertisements for various companies and eventually became associated with the pop-art movement. In the early 1960’s Rosenquist decided to quit commercial painting and focus on more personal projects in his own studio. He used elements of his abstract training at the ASL and Minneapolis School of Art, and combined them with his knowledge gleaned from working in the advertising world. The result was an exploration of the role of advertising, art and consumer culture in society. Because of his focus on popular culture, his work is often compared and contrasted with other pop-artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Other artists you may like: Tom Wesselmann
