About Richard Merkin
Richard Merkin was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1938 and died at his home in Croton-on-Hudson, New York in 2009; but he did a lot of living and working in that time. He was a beloved professor at RISD for 42 years, was a contributing editor of Vanity Fair, a contributing illustrator for several major magazines, wrote a style column for Gentlemen’s Quarterly (he loved style and was a famous “dandy”), and designed some album covers in his spare time. You can see his photo on the cover of The Beatles’ “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”, and appears briefly in the 1974 film version of “The Great Gatsby”. He received numerous awards and accolades for his work in his lifetime, participated in many shows, and can be seen in museum and private collections.
