About Hisashi Otsuka:

Hisashi Otsuka was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1948. At the age of 15, Otsuka apprenticed for one of Japan’s exalted kimono designers, Tateo Jo. Otsuka is also schooled in Zen and the martial arts and is rooted in Japanese tradition. Otsuka moved to Hawaii in 1979. His work today is a mix of ancient Eastern techniques and modern Western ideas. His poets and warriors, kabuki figures, ukiyo-e women, and elegant calligraphy are heavily influenced by the classical past, while in color and composition, his work achieves a more contemporary look. His work is described as neo-deco, dramatic and elegantly decorative. He has shown in cities like New York, London, Paris, San Francisco, Tokyo and all over Hawaii.
