Stephen McMillan was born on December 21, 1949 in Berkeley, California. His early exposure to the San Francisco Bay fueled his artistic interest in landscapes as it was one of his first drawing subjects. McMillan did most of his studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz but spent a year at Hornsey College of Art in London, England. He primarily works in aquatint etchings from freehand drawings he makes from photographs of his. After graduating from UCSC in 1975, McMillan worked in graphic design in San Francisco until 1979. From there until 1992 he was an artist in residence at Kala Institute in Berkeley. He taught printmaking classes during that time as well. McMillan finally moved out of California in 2006 to Bellingham, Washington. He has lived and worked there since.
