Israeli artist Yaacov Agam is most famous for his pioneering of kinetic sculpture and abstract optical prints which give the viewer the illusion of movement. Intricate blocks of color and line form patterns which change and move depending upon the viewer’s location and reference point. A color theorist as well, Agam’s use of contrasting primary color add give his prints striking impact, while maintaining a surprisingly serene, almost hypnotic effect.Yaacov Agam Biography:
Born in Palestine 1928 Yaacov Agam studied in Jerusalem, Zurich, and Paris. While attending Zurich’s Kunstgewerbe Schule, the artist studied under the renowned color theorist Johannes Itten, before moving to Paris full time. Agam has had retrospectives at the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris in 1972, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York in 1980. His works are included in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. among others.
