Helen Zarin was born in Shiraz, Iran in 1970. She began painting at the age of five, and studied with well known Persian artist Keyvan Saber during high school. Zarin’s relationship with Saber was critical to her development as an artist. He helped her refine her skills and pushed her to create her own unique style. After enrolling in the Art and Culture Organization for gifted Persian artists, Zarin was able to win many national awards, gaining her wide exposure.
Ultimately, conditions in Iran compelled Zarin to pursue her art elsewhere, moving first to Europe and finally to the United States 1993. Zarin attended La Guardia Community College in New York City, and furthered her arts education at Catonsville Community College in Baltimore, Maryland.
Zarin’s art has a deeply mystical quality that both calms and excites. At first glance, her art instills complete serenity, but upon further observation one can see an energy radiating beneath the surface. Zarin paints several subjects, including landscapes, figures, and still lifes. Zarin’s works are playful yet thoughtful, highlighting the mastery behind her chosen medium.
