Sussland, Karolina Vera
Karolina Vera Sussland was born in the Czech Republic and left her country at the height of the Cold War. Her family adopted Phoenix, Arizona as their new home. After studying Chemistry and Drawing at Arizona State University, Sussland went on to be a creative force in Phoenix since the 2000s.
Sussland’s work relies on precise drawing skills, inspired by Gerhard Richter. Her recent work offers expressions through mark making and color, and proves a testament to the variations in nature and the playfulness of the human spirit. Her compositions reflect curiosity and charm, evoking the aesthetic of Cy Twombly. Sussland’s work has been reviewed in Art Papers and the Arizona Republic. She is featured in Nan Ellin’s “Phoenix: 21st Century City.”
