A local New England artist, Harvey Shanbaum explores a focused interest in flower photography. With ethereal and translucent subject matter, his intensely realistic photography leads the eye of the viewer to notice the minute components of colorful plant life. Shanbaum captures flowers with a zoomed-in perspective and dramatic lighting. By focusing on the microscopic details, textures, and natural splendor of the florals, he generates numerous angles and perspectives to mirror his mind’s vision in print.
Experiencing a sense of peaceful calm when submersed in gardens and nature, he views his chosen subject matter as a refuge from stress. While Shanbaum does not believe that the beauty of nature can necessarily be replicated by humans, he does feel that we may all interpret it in a unique way.
Generally, Shanbaum prefers to focus on a singular subject, an individual flower, bud or leaf, rather than the larger view.
He hopes to create a photograph that is a work of art, through which the viewer can admire the beauty of nature and witness the striking details that would otherwise be overlooked.
